Svinjara ( Albanian  also Svinjarë or Frashër / -i , Serbian Свињаре Svinjare ) is a village in the municipality of Mitrovica e Jugut in northern Kosovo . It is located south of downtown Mitrovica, not far from the Sitnica River .

history

During the serious unrest in March 2004, the KFOR evacuated the 300 Serbian residents of the village on March 18, and shortly afterwards their houses and properties were burned down and looted by Albanians . After the riots, Kosovo's Provisional Self-Government set up a commission to rebuild all houses, public buildings and property belonging to religious communities that were destroyed during the riots. In Svinjare, 137 of the 141 houses destroyed were to be rebuilt. However, the houses were of poor quality and there was no infrastructure. As a result, only five returnees lived there by February 2006. The few Serbs living there complain that their personal security has been compromised.

population

The Kosovar census of 2011 determined a population of 567 for Svinjara. Of these, 561 (98.94%) described themselves as Albanians , four (0.71%) as Bosniaks and two people (0.35%) belonged to other ethnic groups.
