Swordbrothers (original title: Hyeoltu ) is a historical film by the South Korean director Park Hoon-jung from 2011. The film is about two adoptive brothers during the Joseon Dynasty .

action

At the time of King Gwanghaegun , Korea (Joseon, 1619) was fraternized with the Chinese Ming dynasty . This calls on Korea to send soldiers to war against the Manchurians . A unit led by Heon-myeong is currently fighting the Manchurians and wants to hold out until the main force arrives. However, they are hopelessly inferior. To save his life, Du-su escapes from the battlefield and finds an abandoned house. From the unity, only Heon-myeong and his friend Do-yeong can barely survive. But in the snow and cold they also face death. Do-yeong's leg is injured and he is passed out. At that moment Heon-myeong tells him that he betrayed his father and is responsible for his death, assuming that Do-yeong would not hear it and would die soon anyway. The next day Heon-myeong wants to make his way to Korea. But Do-yeong suddenly wakes up and pretends not to have heard anything he said.

Together they make it to the house that Du-su found before. You recognize him as a compatriot. But Heon-myung is skeptical because he thinks he knows him from his unity. He usually makes short work of deserters. But Du-su claims to be from the main unit. Flashbacks show how he was betrayed by an aristocrat and only had to go to war by him. Du-su knows the area well and should lead them to Korea. Meanwhile, Do-yeong accuses Heon-myeong. He heard everything. and will kill Heon-myeong. He also tells Du-su that Heon-myeong will never let them live. A fight ensues in which Heon-myeong loses his sight. But he's still an excellent fighter. Manchurian soldiers suddenly appear. But they can put them to flight. However, one of them can flee and inform the other.

Flashbacks show how Heon-myeong and Do-yeong were raised and trained by Do-yeong's father. Heon-myeong comes from a hostile clan. He was in love with the young Seo-hyun and was always better than Do-yeong at all times. But when Heon-myeong, unlike Do-yeong, does not get a job in the palace and Do-yeong falls in love with Seo-hyun, he becomes angry. Another clan finally tells him to betray Do-yeong's father. Then he would get a place in the palace. However, he is committed to Do-yeong's life.

However, Do-yeong tells Heon-myeong that he already knew all of this. He was deceived. The same people who claimed Heon-myeong betrayed wanted Do-yeong to kill him. Do-yeong takes courage and wants to live to get revenge. But Do-yeong and Du-su are two stronger. However, he can kill Du-su. When a larger Manchurian unit suddenly appears, Do-yeong is able to hide. Heon-myeong imagines he is back in Korea, marrying Seo-hyun and taking revenge. But instead he is being caught by the Manchurians and thrown outside the door. The Manchurians realize that there must have been a fight where everyone killed each other. So they move on and scoff at the Koreans fraternized with the Ming who pointlessly go to war without knowing what they are fighting for. Heon-myeong was about to die on his own. When the soldiers are gone, Do-yeong comes out.

reception

For Kwon Mee-yoo of the Korea Times , the film offers a new style for epic period films. The place of the action is an abandoned tavern instead of wide plains and great battles. This increases the feeling of tension. The fights are stylish and the lead actors' performance is enthusiastic.
