Sylacauga is an American city ​​in Alabama . It is located in Talladega County and had 12,616 inhabitants in the 2000 census.

The first documented case in which a person was hit and injured by an object from space occurred here. On November 30, 1954, a 4 kg meteorite fell through the roof of a house, hit a radio and injured resident Ann Hodges .

history

The first known inhabitants of the area in the valley of the Coosa River were Indians from the tribe of the Creek . Sylacauga was first mentioned in the records of Hernando de Soto in 1540 . The name is made up of two Indian words - Chalaka-ge , which means something like "The place of the Chalaka tribe". The city was first incorporated as Syllacoga in 1838 and then again as Sylacauga in 1887. Sylacauga, "The Marble City", is located on one of the hardest and brightest marble fields in the world. This has a length of about 50 km and is about two kilometers wide and about 120 meters thick. The marble for the White House in Washington comes from a quarry in Sylacauga.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Sylacauga lived in the city of 12,616 people. The population density was 262.9 people per km ². There were 5748 housing units at an average of 119.8 per km ². The Sylacauga population was 69.17% White , 28.91% Black or African American , 0.26% Native American , 0.29% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 0.40% said other races belong to and 0.91% named two or more races. 0.97% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Sylacauga were distributed to 5215 households out of which 30.1% were living in children under 18 years. 46.3% of households were married, 16.1% had a female head of household without a husband, and 34.4% were not families. 31.7% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 15.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
