Symbol of Salvation is the fourth studio album by the American heavy metal band Armored Saint . It was released on Metal Blade Records in May 1991 .

Origin and style

The pieces on the album were made as demo recordings between 1988 and 1991. The demos were recorded with guitarist Dave Prichard , who died of leukemia before the album was recorded in 1990 . The album is also dedicated to him. The first guitar solo of the piece Tainted Past is still from Prichard.

After his death within seven months of 1990, the band almost broke up. But the record company Metal Blade convinced the band, who had already written 25 tracks, to keep going. She rehearsed with other guitarists but decided to move on with former members Jeff Duncan and Phil Sandoval.

Most of the pieces on the album are melodic mid-tempo metal songs, among which the rhythmic tribal dance and the ballad Another Day stand out. The latter is introduced by the intro Half Drawn Bridge played with two-part guitars .

In 2003 Metal Blade released a remastered new edition, which was on three CDs a. a. also contained the demo recordings. Another new edition was published in 2011 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary.

reception

Eduardo Rivadavia awarded 4.5 out of five stars and the “AMG Album Pick” award at Allmusic . He described the record as the "best hour" of Armored Saint, it was the best-produced and most diverse album of the band. Götz Kühnemund called the record the “masterpiece from California, the cult disc par excellence” in the issue of Rock Hard magazine at the time . “Such a super album, which even surpasses the (underground) classic Delirious Nomad , simply cannot be ignored. The 13 songs it contains are too good to be expected to be another sales flop. ”He awarded 9.5 out of ten points. Last Train Home magazine also ranked Last Train Home at # 30 for “Best Songs of All Time”. The album was also included in the magazine's list of the magazine's 500 best albums at number 424. Jenny Rönnebeck wrote that the record looked "like a piece".
