Symonanthus aromaticus is a plant type from the genus Symonanthus in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Symonanthus aromaticus is an upright shrub with a height of up to 1.3 m. The branches, the undersides of the leaves and the outside of the crown are moderately to densely tomentose with non-glandular, forked to heavily branched trichomes and smaller glandular trichomes. The tops of the leaves, pedicels, and calyx are sparsely to moderately hairy with glandular trichomes, but some non-glandular trichomes are also present here. The leaves are in dense groups, are narrowly triangular to linear, perched and usually 20 to 45 mm long and 1.5 to 5 mm wide. They are entire, but the edge is slightly bent back.

The flowers are single or in cymes of two to three flowers. The male flowers are on 3 to 7.5 mm long peduncles and have a 4 to 5 mm long calyx. Their crown is 7 to 8 mm long, the corolla tube reaches lengths of 6 to 7 mm. The stamens are 3 to 6 mm long. The ovary is sterile and 0.7 to 0.9 mm long. Female flowers look similar, but are slightly smaller: the flower stalk is only 1 to 3.5 mm long, the calyx 4 to 5 mm, the crown up to about 6 mm with a 5 mm long corolla tube. Usually only four, but rarely five, stamens are formed, all of which are sterile and 2 to 3 mm long. The ovary is 1.5 mm long and contains six to ten ovules .

The fruit is a broadly ovate-elliptical to almost spherical capsule that is 3.5 to 4.5 mm long and contains seeds about 2 mm long .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72.

Distribution and locations

The species is endemic to southwestern Western Australia , in the southeastern Wheatbelt region . It occurs in scattered populations on sandy soil, mostly in disturbed locations of the mallee or woodland vegetation.
