description
Vegetative characteristics
Symonanthus grow as separate-sex shrubs that either remain very small and only become 25 cm high ( S. bacroftii ) or reach a height of up to 1.3 m ( S. aromaticus ). They are hairy with glandular and non-glandular branching trichomes .
The leaves are long and narrow, the shape of the leaf blades is narrowly ovate to linear, the edges are rolled up. They are 5 to 45 mm long and 1 to 5 mm wide.
blossoms
The flowers stand individually or in groups of two to three flowers on 1 to 7.5 mm long pedicels. The calyx is 2 to 5 mm long, the five calyx lobes are about as long as the calyx tube, occasionally one of them is also a little shorter. The radially symmetrical crown is 5 to 8 mm long, narrowly tubular or cylindrical-bell-shaped, the upper half is funnel-shaped. The corolla tube is 4 to 7 mm long, almost completely divided or provided with five uniform, very short and wide corolla lobes.
In the male flowers there are usually five or only four (less often three) stamens , occasionally one (or two) staminodes are formed instead of the missing stamens . The anthers are linearly shaped and about 0.7 to 0.8 mm long and combined to form a cylinder during the flowering phase. The two theka have grown together almost to the base. The female flowers are ingredients to a rudimentary ovary and a remnant of a stylus stunted.
The female flowers are similar to the male flowers, but the stamens are sterile and smaller. The ovary is larger and has four to ten ovules and a fully developed style with a very short, two-lobed, head-shaped scar .
Fruits and seeds
The fruits are almost spherical capsules with a diameter of about 3 to 4.5 mm. They open with crevices in the partition wall with four chambers. They contain only a few seeds, they are about 2 mm long, the embryo is slightly curved.
Other features
The base chromosome number is .
Occurrence
The genus grows endemically in an area near the coast in southwestern Western Australia .
