history

In the 11th century, the early Staufers built a stone castle on the Herwartstein for the first time. The Ministeriale Herbort was used as an administrator by the Hohenstaufen owner.

The name Burg Herwartstein is mentioned for the first time in 1240 in the fiefdom of the Reichsschenken von Winterstetten, then comes into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein and is captured by the troops of the Habsburg King Rudolf I in 1287 and badly damaged. The rule of the castle is withdrawn from the Helfensteiners and the administration is transferred to the Counts of Öttingen.

In 1302 the castle was sold to King Albrecht I , who in 1303 founded the Cistercian monastery in Königsbronn ("Fons Regis"). In 1310 the castle was demolished and the material used to build the monastery.

The foundation walls were excavated in the 20th century . The Herwartstein ruin has been a sight on the Staufer road since 1997 .
