Synagogue (Châlons-en-Champagne)
The synagogue Chalons-en-Champagne is located in the town of Chalons-en-Champagne in the Marne department in the French region of Grand Est . The synagogue's address is 21, rue Lochet.
history
There is evidence of a synagogue in Châlons-en-Champagne as early as 1367, which was located in the Rue de la Juerie ( Judengasse ). The synagogue, inaugurated on September 24, 1875, has Moorish style elements on the outside . Steps lead to its portal , which is spanned by a horseshoe arch with glazing. The horseshoe arch rests on two pillars that delimit the portal on the right and left. The whole portal is framed by a carved frame with intertwined ribbons. To the right and left of the portal there is another window with a horseshoe arch. On the first floor there is a triple window above the portal, which rests on four columns, with jagged arches, and to the right and left of it a further window, which also have jagged arches and rest on two columns. The threefold structure of the ground floor is also repeated on the second floor: in the middle a twin window with round arches and on each side a rose window , the tracery of which forms a star of David . Acroters form the roof, which is crowned in the middle by the tablets of the law .
The synagogue was built in 1874/75 according to the plans of the architect Alexis Vagny (1821-1888) from Châlons-en-Champagne . There is a Protestant church on the same street, which was built in 1880 in a neo-Gothic style .
The following Bible verses are written in Hebrew above the triple window on the first floor : How lovely are your apartments, Mr. Zebaoth ! (Psalm 84).
Since May 6, 2004 the Synagogue of Châlons-en-Champagne is a monument worthy of protection ( monument historique ). The synagogue is still used for worship today.
