The synagogue in Neidenstein , a community in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1831/32. The secular synagogue is located at Kirchgraben 6.

history

A synagogue is documented in Neidenstein from 1796. Over time, the building became too small for the growing number of parishioners. At the turn of the year 1831/32, the new synagogue built on the site of the previous building was inaugurated. In addition to the synagogue, the Neidenstein Jewish community had a schoolhouse and a mikveh .

The plans for the new synagogue were made by the master builder Schwarz from Bruchsal. It was one of the largest regional synagogues in Baden . Presumably in the middle of the 19th century, a harmonium was set up in the synagogue to provide musical accompaniment to church services.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior furnishings were destroyed by SA men from Eschelbronn and Neidenstein. After the pillage on the night of the pogrom, the Jewish community reported the loss of 14 Torah scrolls , curtains, blankets and Torah covers, a chandelier, three candelabra, lighting fixtures, lecterns, tables, chairs and cupboards, silver cups, silver cult objects, prayer robes , prayer books and much more more.

According to the sales contract dated January 20, 1939, the building was sold by the Jewish community to a local farmer for 1,000 Reichsmarks . This broke off the front part facing the street a short time later. The synagogue building was converted into a barn or stable.

Since the Second World War

The preserved building, now a listed building, was still used for agricultural purposes. A concept for the preservation and use of the building as a memorial and documentation site presented in a diploma thesis in 1998 has not yet been implemented as of the beginning of 2019.
