The synagogue in Eberbach , a town in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1912/13. The synagogue was located at the confluence of Adolf-Knecht-Strasse and Brückenstrasse, which was laid out in 1951.

history

On 19./20. In September 1913, the synagogue was inaugurated with numerous representatives from the authorities and the churches. The district rabbi Leopold Löwenstein carried out the inauguration. Mayor John Gustav Weiss stated in his address that the city authorities would also take the new Jewish house of God under their protection “in strict neutrality” and wished the Jewish community a further growth, prosperity and prosperity. The city of Eberbach had given a grant of 800 marks for the construction of the synagogue.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was burned down by the SS local group 12/32 . Scriptures, prayer books and Torah scrolls were brought to the town hall by the police. The fire department secured the adjacent buildings after the fire. The city of Eberbach, following a state requirement, charged the Jewish community for the cost of clean-up work in the amount of 1576.70 Reichsmarks. The price for the synagogue property of 576 Reichsmarks was deducted from this.

Commemoration

On November 9, 2013, a newly created memorial was inaugurated in the presence of Rabbi Shaul Friberg from Heidelberg. It consists of a sandstone block on which roof-shaped bronze reliefs are mounted. Text boards and lists of names are also attached.
