Wolfgang Brönner

Wolfgang Dieter Brönner (born November 17, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German art historian and monument conservator . From 1991 to 2005 he served as public curator , the State Conservation Office of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz in Mainz.

Life

Bronner studied from 1961 at the universities of Würzburg , Lausanne and Bonn Jura , before staying in Bonn, to study in 1965, art history and classical archeology joined. In 1971 he passed the second state examination in law. In the same year he was at Heinrich Lützeler in art history with a thesis on the "French architectural theory of the 17th century" for Dr. phil. PhD .

After completing his studies, he first moved to the administration of the University of Dortmund for two years as the department head for study and construction matters and then joined the Bremen State Office for Monument Preservation as a scientific consultant . From there in 1980 he worked as a scientific advisor to the Rhenish Office for Monument Preservation . Its director at the time, Udo Mainzer , entrusted Wolfgang Brönner with basic research on architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, for which purpose a new section was set up within the inventory and ultimately initiated the creation of the third and greatly expanded edition published standard work on villa architecture in Germany: The bourgeois villa in Germany 1830 - 1900. From 1986 Brönner headed the inventory department.

One year after his habilitation in art history at the University of Bonn, Wolfgang Brönner resigned as senior curator at the Rhenish Office for the Preservation of Monuments on September 15, 1991 and succeeded Magnus Backes as the state curator of Rhineland-Palatinate. A task that he carried out until his departure on November 29, 2005.

In addition to his official duties, Brönner has been the editor-in-chief of the biannual magazine Die Denkmalpflege since 1993 . In 1999 he was also appointed adjunct professor at the University of Mainz . Before that, he had already held lectureships at the universities in Bremen , Cologne , Bonn and Mainz since 1974 .

In addition to other memberships in scientific advisory boards, including those for the Speyer and Mainz Cathedral, Brönner was also involved in the preparations for the inclusion of the cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in the World Heritage List in 2002 through the State Office for Monument Preservation and Rhineland-Palatinate .
