Since his father, Heinrich Becker, whose job is listed as servant, bookbinder or photographer's assistant in his registration records, moved to the USA in 1899, Max Josef grew up with several siblings with his mother, Elisabeth, née Schwer. Until 1917 he then worked in Heinrich von Zügel's painting class , most recently as his master student.

Becker remained unmarried and worked as an animal and landscape painter in Munich throughout his life. Since 1917 he took part in the annual exhibitions in the Glaspalast with his depictions of farm horses, cows and sheep as well as some landscape paintings , in the 1920s also in those of the Free Artists' Association in Munich, and until the 1950s in the art exhibitions in the Haus der Kunst in Munich . He was a member of the Munich Artists 'Cooperative and the Allotria artists' association in Munich.

Becker was buried in the old part of the Munich forest cemetery (grave 152-3-212).
