Synagogue (Neckarbischofsheim)
The synagogue in Neckarbischofsheim , a town in the Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1848/49 and destroyed in 1938. The synagogue was in Schulgasse.
history
Since the synagogue built in 1769 in Bischofsheim in the Alte Rathausgasse had become too small for the growing number of Jewish community members, a new building was built according to plans by the builder Fritschi from Rappenau , which was inaugurated in spring 1849.
The synagogue had 150 to 200 seats for men and around 100 seats in the women's gallery . With a length of 17.90 m and a width of 11.90 m, the building set an urban highlight.
In 1871 the synagogue courtyard was walled and in 1912 major renovations were carried out.
The synagogue was burned down during the November pogrom in 1938 . In the early morning of November 10th, SA men set a fire in the synagogue. The inventory including the 14 Torah scrolls was burned on the sports field. The Jewish schoolhouse was also destroyed, and the two pieces of land were leveled.
Commemoration
During construction work for the sewer system in the 1970s, part of the foundation walls of the former synagogue was exposed. Today they are under Schulgasse. In 1981 a memorial with a menorah and plaque was set up.

Individual evidence
- ↑ Until the 19th century the name of the city was "Bischofsheim". To better distinguish between the towns of Bischofsheim am Hohe Steg and Bischofsheim an der Tauber, however, the current name "Neckarbischofsheim" finally became established in 1806.
