The New Synagogue in Weinheim , a town in the Rhein-Neckar district in the north-west of Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1905/06 at Bürgermeister-Ehret-Strasse 5 (today: Ehretstrasse 5) according to plans by the Frankfurt architect Max Seckbach .

history

The financing was made possible by a donation from the leather manufacturer Sigmund Hirsch . The building was inaugurated on August 2, 1906 under the chairman of the Jewish community of Weinheim Moritz Pfälzer .

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was largely demolished on the morning of November 10, 1938. SA men had previously devastated the interior with axes and pickaxes. In April 1939, the Jewish community was asked to have the synagogue ruins demolished. A house was built on the property after 1945.

Commemoration

A plaque on a neighboring house commemorates the synagogue. It was attached in 1967 to the building of the land registry, Bürgermeister-Ehret-Straße 14, and moved to the adult education center in 1988, as the owners of the house at Bürgermeister-Ehret-Straße 5 did not allow the plaque to be attached to their house.
