Synagogue (Rhineland-Palatinate)
synagogue

The synagogue in Münchweiler an der Alsenz , a local community in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in the second half of the 18th century. The derelict synagogue at Hauptstraße 3 has been a protected cultural monument since 1993 .

architecture

The late baroque plastered building with a hipped mansard roof , a former farmhouse, was converted into a synagogue in 1806. Rooms for the Jewish school and the teacher's apartment were also set up in the building.

The synagogue had 40 places for men and 25 places for women. In 1910 major repairs were made to the synagogue building.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated by the local SA . In the presence of the residents, rituals and prayer books were thrown on the street and burned. The synagogue building was not burned to the ground, since the former teacher's apartment was now inhabited by Christians and neighboring houses would have been endangered by the close development.

In early 1939 the synagogue was forcibly sold to the Münchweiler community. Towards the end of the Second World War , French prisoners of war were housed in the building.

In 1958, the municipal administration moved into the former synagogue. In 1990 a master baker bought the building and converted it into a residential and commercial building.
