Synagogue (Rhineland-Palatinate)
synagogue

The synagogue in Kirchheimbolanden , a town in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1835/36. The synagogue was at Am Husarenhof 8, the former Schloßstraße 15.

history

The building was built according to plans by civil building inspector August von Voit in the immediate vicinity of the burned down synagogue. Voit was based on the synagogue in Ingenheim . Construction began in April 1835. On September 1, 1836, the synagogue was by district - Rabbi Moses Cohen inaugurated.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA men set a fire in the synagogue, whereupon it burned out completely. The ruins were blown up in early 1941. The property came into the possession of the city of Kirchheimbolanden.

After the restitution proceedings were concluded, the city paid compensation of 2,300 DM in 1950 and was able to purchase the property again for 4,500 DM the following year. During the clearing up of the property, a Torah scroll with a pennant was found and handed over to the Jewish Community of the Rhine Palatinate.

architecture

The synagogue was built in a classicist - Moorish mixed style. The west facade was framed by corner pilasters and a shield gable. The portal in the central axis showed a characteristic horseshoe arch . Five large horseshoe arched windows divided the side walls. Round arch friezes formed the end .

In the basement there was a classroom, a mikveh and the teacher's apartment.

Commemoration

In 1978 a memorial plaque was attached to the synagogue site, which is now designed as a park between Paulskirche and Schlossplatz . In 1984 three stones from the Natzweiler-Struthof , Dachau and Auschwitz concentration camps were piled up in front of the memorial plaque.
