history

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was destroyed by foreign National Socialists. On February 5, 1940, the municipality of Merchingen bought the synagogue building and then used it as a gym .

In 1950 the former synagogue was sold to the Catholic parish of Hüngheim , which set up its subsidiary church in Merchingen. The church tower with two bells was added at that time.

During the renovation from 1975 to 1977, a genisa with remains of religious writings, slaughter knives and other rituals was found in the roof cladding .

Commemoration

On November 6, 1983, a memorial stone was unveiled at the former synagogue, which was created by the artist Bernhard Reißfelder from Osterburken . The then Baden regional rabbi Nathan Peter Levinson gave a speech. A few weeks later a bronze plaque was added to the memorial stone.
