The synagogue in Buchen , a town in the Neckar-Odenwald district in the north of Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1863/64. The synagogue was located at Vorstadtstrasse 35.

history

The first modern synagogue in Buchen is mentioned around 1700. It was located in today's Haagstrasse. It was badly damaged by fire on November 28, 1861.

The Jewish community of Buchen was able to acquire a piece of land at Vorstadtstrasse 35 for a new building. The synagogue was built in 1863/64. Solemnly inaugurated August 1864. A mikveh (ritual bath) was set up in the basement .

On August 11, 1931, the synagogue was the first target of a right-wing attack.

The synagogue was closed in the summer of 1938 and sold on August 31, 1938. Nevertheless, the interior of the synagogue was demolished during the pogrom night on November 10, 1938 . In 1939 the synagogue building was demolished and initially a car repair shop and later a food market were built in its place.

Commemoration

In 1983 a memorial plaque was put up. When the former supermarket was demolished in autumn 2002, remains of the synagogue were uncovered: the first floor and two basement floors. A cellar with two rooms and a vaulted corridor was uncovered in the second basement. As a result of the building history investigations, the vaults found were placed under monument protection.

At the beginning of March 2004, the city council decided to create a memorial for the Buchen Jews and 40 parking spaces on the former synagogue site. On the two vaulted cellars that have been preserved, a green area was laid out, which was named Jakob-Mayer-Platz , in memory of the Jewish local poet Jakob Mayer (1866–1939).

Jakob-Mayer-Platz and the memorial in the basement of the synagogue were inaugurated on November 9, 2006. It recalls the history of the Jewish community and the Jews from Buchen and the districts of Bödigheim , Eberstadt and Hainstadt who were deported and murdered in 1940 .
