The former synagogue in Oberdorf am Ipf , a district of Bopfingen in the Ostalb district in Baden-Württemberg , is located at Lange Straße 13 .

history

The synagogue around 1900

The Jewish community of Oberdorf built its first synagogues in 1704 and 1744/45. The synagogue, which was built between 1809 and 1812 and still exists today, was built on the site of the previous building from 1744/45.

The exact date of inauguration of the new synagogue is not known, but the year 1812 is affixed to the east wall of the synagogue building. In 1858 the interior was renovated.

During the November pogroms in 1938 , SA men from outside set the synagogue on fire. The building was sold to the municipality of Oberdorf in 1939. In 1940 the Oberdorf gymnastics club acquired the building and used it as a gym. During the Second World War , the synagogue served as accommodation for former forced laborers .

In 1950 the Catholic community of Oberdorf acquired the building and converted it into a church. A wooden roof turret with a bell was erected on the roof . After moving out in 1969, the synagogue building was used as a storage room.

In 1989 the sponsoring association acquired the former synagogue in Oberdorf e. V. the building and after extensive construction work it was opened in 1993 as a memorial and meeting place for the former synagogue of Bopfingen-Oberdorf . An extensive genisa was discovered in the attic , which mainly consists of prayer literature.

Since 1997, the Museum of the History of the Jews in the Ostalb District has also been located in the former synagogue.

Torah shrine

The right entrance for women led to the staircase that led to the women's gallery. In the middle of the prayer hall that stood Bima to lecture from the Torah . In front of the Torah shrine in the east facade was a podium for digging the Torah scrolls. In the Torah shrine there was a cupboard for storing the Torah scrolls.
