The synagogue in Montbéliard , a French town in the Doubs department in the historic Franche-Comté region , was built in 1888. The synagogue on Rue de la Synagogue has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1992 .

history

After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and the annexation of Alsace and parts of Lorraine by the German Empire , Jewish residents moved from these areas to Montbéliard in order to be able to continue living in France. The synagogue in Montbéliard was built for the growing number of parishioners.

The synagogue was built according to the plans of the architect Charles-Frédéric Surleau from Montbéliard in the neo-Romanesque style , which was very popular at the time. The architectural style of the synagogue in Montbéliard is characterized by arched windows , pillars and an arched portal with columns .
