La Vallée - Dolmen

La Vallee is a western commune with 677 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

La Vallée is about 35 meters above sea level. d. M. in the historic cultural landscape of the Saintonge about 26 kilometers (driving distance) northwest of Saintes or 20 kilometers southeast of Rochefort .

Population development

From 1831 to 1872 the place always had over 800 inhabitants. Thereafter, the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a population decline, which has been stopped in the last few decades due to the proximity to the large cities of Saintes and Rochefort and the comparatively low rents and land prices in La Vallée.

economy

For centuries, agriculture for the self-sufficiency of the population played the largest role in the economic life of the community. But wine has been grown in the area since Roman times, which has been distilled since early modern times and exported to northern Europe (especially to England ). La Vallée is one of the Bois ordinaires et communs of the Cognac wine region , but most of the grapes are processed into wine and Pineau des Charentes .

history

The fact that the place has a Romanesque church suggests that it already existed in the Middle Ages. The eastern section of the church has been destroyed; Whether this happened in the Hundred Years War (1377-1453) or during the Huguenot Wars (1562-1598) is unclear. No destruction is known from the time of the French Revolution .

  • The lower part of the west facade of the Saint-Vivien church is divided into three segments by four upwardly tapering service templates: The central part contains the archivolt portal with a slightly pointed arch; There is a glare portal in each of the two side parts. The lower level ends with a simple cornice . The middle of the second façade level above is opened to the nave through a window; the two lateral segments are - apart from the diagonally offset house blocks - undecorated. The second level closes at the top with a figuratively designed console frieze ; above it is the completely unadorned gable field , as is usual with the churches of Saintonge . The interior of the church has a single nave - the two western yokes of the nave have an open roof structure , whereby the beginnings of the vaults can still be clearly seen; the two eastern nave bays are vaulted with pointed barrels. The original apse was destroyed - the clearly drawn-in new apse below the crossing tower was equipped with a rib vault . The arcade structure of the outer wall and the crossing tower with its open bell storey and the round stair tower should also be noted . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
  • On a meadow outside the village is the Dolmen de la Pierre Levée , an ensemble of megalithiques de la Pierre Levée , which formerly formed a dolmen . The site has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1938 .
