The Schlüchtern synagogue was the synagogue of the city of Schlüchtern in the Main-Kinzig district in East Hesse from 1898 until the Reichspogromnacht 1938 .

history

The previous building, from around 1670, was located near the upper gate. It was equipped with a women's gallery in 1837 . The building was only demolished in 1978. A memorial plaque at Obertorstraße 33 marks the corresponding location.

At the end of the 19th century, the Jewish community in Schlüchtern had grown to almost 400 people, so that the old synagogue was no longer sufficient for them. That is why the Jewish community erected the building that is still present today at Grabenstrasse 10.

The interior was devastated during the Reichspogromnacht , but the building remained standing and was used as a warehouse. In 1945/46 it was restored on the orders of the US occupation forces .

After the Holocaust, there was no longer a Jewish community in Schlüchtern. The building was sold and used as a clothing factory from 1950. 1970–2010 it was used for cultural events and as a library, later also as a cinema. In spring 2013 it was empty.

description

It is a solitary building on a corner plot in neo-Romanesque style on a cross-shaped floor plan . The four facades are almost identical and lavish, partly in red sandstone , partly plastered with gables , blind arcades , arched and rose windows. They are each crowned by a shield gable . The central interior is vaulted by a dome . While the exterior remained largely unchanged, the interior was initially destroyed in 1938 and later redesigned for subsequent uses; In 1955/56 a false ceiling was installed. In 1995 remains of the original painting were uncovered inside.

The building is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
