Syzygium microphyllum is a species of plant in the myrtle family(Myrtaceae). This rare tree is endemic to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

Vegetative characteristics

Syzygium microphyllum grows as a basum and reaches heights of growth of 10 meters. The bark is gray-brown with white spots. When the trees are fully grown, the bark is scaly. The young twigs are square, with age they become pencil-shaped, thin and smooth. The opposite or cross-opposite arranged leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The groove-shaped, smooth petioles are 0.1 cm long. The simple leaf blade is 0.6 to 3 centimeters long and 0.2 to 1 centimeter wide, lanceolate to elliptical-egg-shaped with a blunt upper end and a pointedly rounded blade base. The midrib is channel-shaped. The secondary and tertiary leaf veins are indistinct.

Generative characteristics

Terminal inflorescences and lateral, golden inflorescences are formed. The flower stalks are 0.2 inches long. The flowers are white. The solitary, spherical to elongated berries measure 0.5 × 5 centimeters. The calyx that still remains on the fruit is pink.

Occurrence

Syzygium microphyllum occurs only in the Agasthyamalai Hills in the Kannyakumari District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The habitat are open evergreen mountain forests at altitudes between 1100 and 1400 m.

Endangerment status

In 1998 the species Syzygium gambleanum was added to the IUCN list of extinct plant species. According to the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew , however, proved Syzygium gambleanum as invalid homonym of the species Syzygium microphyllum which (by the IUCN as "critically endangered" endangered ) substance. The main threats are commercial plantations, overgrazing and fires.
