Tédio Boys was a Portuguese psychobilly / garage rock band.

history

They were founded in 1989 in Coimbra in the Bar Moçambique , a hot spot near the University of Coimbra . The band name is a play on words that results from the term teddy boys ' youth subculture and the Portuguese word for boredom (Tédio) and should reflect the lifestyle of the Coimbra scene at the time.

They occasionally played on the open street in Coimbra, from where the police drove them because of the volume. Through their appearances, described as explosive, and their idiosyncratic music, which mixed rockabilly with punk , they subsequently became known in subculture circles, but only slowly beyond. In 1993 they played as opening act for Siouxsie and the Banshees in front of a larger audience, at a festival in Figueira da Foz ( I. Mostra de Música Moderna da Figueira da Foz ).

After their demo cassette began to circulate in the scene, they recorded their first album with Porkabilly Psychosis in 1994. At the traditional student farewell party, which as Queima das Fitas is an exuberant annual folk festival with parades and nightly concerts, they were able to perform on the main stage in 1995. They caused a stir when they came on stage largely naked. The US -American record label Elevator Music became aware of the band and took them under contract. There they released their other records and subsequently toured more and more in the USA. Her music continued to develop, and as the proportion of rockabilly and psychobilly decreased, her proximity to garage rock increased.

The regular presence in the USA increased their level of awareness there. Jello Biafra was enthusiastic about them, and they played at a birthday party of Joey Ramone , which was also attended by musicians like New York Dolls , Iggy Pop and Joe Strummer . On their last US tour, there was a bad mood within the band, and the band broke up in 2000 due to musical differences.

After the band ended, their members pursued various projects of their own. One of the band's two songwriters, guitarist Victor Torpedo (also known as Vitinho ), went to London where he formed The Parkinsons , and he starred in a project called Blood Safari. The other was Paulo Furtado, who was successful in Portugal with both his band WrayGunn and his solo project The Legendary Tigerman . Toni Fortuna is the singer of the indie rock / punk band d3o from Coimbra, while drummer Kaló drums in the rock 'n' roll band Bunnyranch . No musical activities have come to light from the former bass player André Ribeiro.

In 2007 the documentary Filhos do Tédio (“Sons of Boredom”) premiered at the IndieLisboa film festival. The film tells the story of the band, with an emphasis on their early stages and US tours. The band members present expressed themselves amused and pleased at the same time. Paulo Furtado said that the film is just one of several possible perspectives on the band, but it is accurate and therefore a valid view.
