The Túnel del Toyo is a combined tunnel and road project in the north of the Colombian Department de Antioquia and just under 100 kilometers from Medellín . The over 586.8 million-US-dollar mega project with a total of 18 tunnels, 30 bridges and about 39.5 kilometers neutra lized highway and access roads is part of the Autopistas de la Prosperidad ( "motorways of prosperity"), as the jargon called and is being implemented by the Government of Colombia through the fourth generation 4G road concession program of the National Road Institute INVIAS .

The project

The construction contract for project no. 4600004806 was signed on December 11, 2015 between the infrastructure department of the government of Antioquia and the consortium Antioquia Al Mar (“From Antioquia to the sea”). The intention is to connect the second largest city of Colombia, Medellín, with the region on the Gulf of Urabá ( Caribbean Sea ), the center of the country and the Pacific as well as with the extremely difficult to access border region to Panama better and faster. From an economic point of view, there is also an urgent political interest in the booming state of Colombia in improving exports and the goods and goods flows of imports intended for the national market.

meaning

Together with the Túnel de Occidente , which has been in existence since 2006, the travel time of the 340 kilometers from Medellín to Turbo on the Caribbean coast will be reduced from seven hours to just over four hours. When it goes into operation in 2024, the Toyo Tunnel, with its 9.84 kilometers, will also be the longest road tunnel in Colombia and Latin America . The structure with the access roads are also of decisive importance for the subsequent road construction concession decisions Mar 1 (Medellín - Santa Fe de Antioquia ) and Mar 2 ( Cañasgordas - El Tigre ) so that the highways can be better linked.

impact

Construction work began in June 2016. More than 1,000 jobs are guaranteed for around ten years, says the operating company. The project is already regarded as a historical reference and a challenge for engineers, not only as the longest road tunnel in Latin America, but also because it operates with the latest tunneling techniques. The completion and handover of the entire section is scheduled for January 23, 2024.
