without rank: Double creeping (Amphisbaenia)
Family : Blanidae
Genre : Blanus
Type : Turkish networms
Scientific name
Blanus strauchi
( Bedriaga , 1884)

The Turkish networm ( Blanus strauchi ), also known as the Turkish ringwool , is one of three species of the double worm ( Amphisbaenia ) found in Europe and lives in the eastern Mediterranean.

features

The total length is up to about 23 cm, the head-torso length up to 20.4 cm. The head is not separated from the trunk. The receding eyes shimmer through under the skin, especially in young animals. The body is covered overall with rectangular to square-looking, mostly larger scales, which are light-edged and ring-shaped surround the body. The bright edges of the scales and the equally bright spaces give the animals a net-like appearance. The color of the scales, apart from the light edges, is dark purple, red-brown or blackish.

distribution

The Turkish networm lives in the southwest and southern coastal areas of Turkey , eastward to northern Iraq and southward in the countries of Syria , Lebanon and Israel , along the Mediterranean coast. In Europe, she lives on some Greek islands off the Turkish coast, such as Rhodes , Kos , Samos , Symi , Leros , Fourni , Nisyros and Kastelorizo . She lives in western Turkey south of Izmir .

habitat

The Turkish networm colonizes open and semi-open habitats, e.g. B. Mediterranean bush and cushion plant vegetation, pasture corridors, clearings of pine forests, and ruins. They are often found under stones. One finds the kind from height of the sea level up to about 1400 m height.

Way of life

Due to the predominantly underground way of life, not much is known about the species. From February to May and in autumn it also lives near the surface, while in winter and in the hot summer months it retreats to deeper soil layers.

Danger

The IUCN lists the species as least concern (not endangered).

Taxonomy

The scientific name was given in honor of the Russian herpetologist Alexander Strauch .

The Turkish networm ( Blanus strauchi ) is a species complex that includes several morphologically hardly or indistinguishable species within the range of distribution . Using molecular biological methods, three phylogenetically clearly delimited clades could be represented. In 2014, the group that was spread to the east was described as a new species under the name Blanus alexandri , an earlier subspecies was elevated to a species as Blanus aporus and the clade spread to the west remained as Blanus strauchi in the narrower sense with its range in Greece and Turkey until received in the Middle East. For Blanus strauchi in the narrower sense, two subspecies are specified after this revision:

  • Blanus strauchi strauchi ( Bedriaga , 1884)
  • Blanus strauchi bedriagae Boulenger , 1884.
