The company was founded in 1969 with 10 employees by Ludwig Szinicz and Heinz König in Wels , Upper Austria . Today's headquarters are in Marchtrenk , Upper Austria.

In 1987 a subsidiary ( TGW Transportgeräte GmbH ) was founded in Siegen ( Germany ). In 2001 TGW, Inc. was founded in the United States . The US company Ermanco was acquired in 2005. In 2010 a branch was opened in France and Sweden. In 2011 the company opened a branch in China and invested 50% in CSI in São Paulo, Brazil. At the beginning of 2012, the company founded TGW Systems Integration AG in Rotkreuz in the Swiss canton of Zug as well as an office in Hobro (Denmark) and Shanghai (China). All of these branches have been expanded since they were founded. In 2015, the TGW unit in Shanghai was expanded to include a production unit in Changzhou. After an initial sales office in Antwerp (Belgium), a new TGW unit for the Benelux region was officially opened in Rosendaal (Netherlands) in 2016.

On July 1, 2014, the TGW Logistics Group, Wels, took over the insolvent logistics software manufacturer Klug GmbH integrated systems, Teunz , Upper Palatinate . In the form of an asset deal , the operation of the company Klug GmbH integrated systems and its 320 employees was transferred to the newly founded company TGW Software Services GmbH. The number of employees in the TGW Logistics Group rose to 2000. Another acquisition took place in 2016: TGW took over CHM Automatisierungstechnik in Stephanskirchen (Germany) including its 60 employees and founded TGW Robotics. TGW is sticking to the Stephanskirchen location and concentrating there on special applications and robotics in intralogistics.

TGW expands the main location in Wels. In 2015, a 75,000 m² building site was acquired in the neighboring municipality of Marchtrenk, where a new office building including a production hall is to be built by 2018.

In the 2016/17 financial year, sales of EUR 621 million were generated. The workforce was just under 2,800. In 2016/17 (as of June 30, 2017) the company generated an EBIT of 44 million euros.

In the course of advancing digitization, TGW is increasingly developing augmented reality and omni-channel solutions.

On November 3, 2017, the company announced that Harald Schröpf, who had previously worked as COO in the company, would succeed CEO Georg Kirchmayr. Due to differing views on the foundation's philosophy, the foundation's board of directors has spoken out in favor of parting with the previous CEO. He left the company at the beginning of November 2017.

In the 2017/18 financial year, sales of EUR 713 million were generated. The workforce was around 3,200. In 2017/18 (as of September 25, 2018) the company generated an EBIT of EUR 36.6 million.

At the beginning of 2019, the company signed a company agreement to grant fire service members special annual leave for work and training. The reason was the snowfall at the beginning of the year, when many fire brigade members had to take the days of vacation or unpaid vacation that are common in the private sector.
