TRT Kurdî (until January 2015 TRT 6 ) is the first state television broadcaster in Turkey in the Kurdish language . The 24-hour program with a focus on information started on January 1, 2009.

Since 2004 there have been individual Kurdish-language programs on TRT . In the course of Turkey's accession negotiations with the European Union , the country implemented reforms in the area of media promotion of minority languages . TRT Kurdî is a state broadcaster with a full program: from children's programs to series, films and documentaries. In this context, TRT went on air on April 2, 2009 with the Kurdish-language radio station “Türkiyenin Sesi” (The Voice of Turkey) and on April 1, 2009 with an Armenian-language radio station “TRT-6 Radyo”. Both radio stations have been broadcasting around the clock since then. The TV channel TRT Kurdî also broadcasts some program content in Persian and Arabic .
The full program in Kurdish attracted attention. In connection with its opening, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke a few words in Kurdish. According to some press reports, the Turkish government is trying to win back viewers of the Kurdish-language program Roj TV produced in Denmark , which the Turkish government had requested to be closed because of its proximity to the PKK .
