The Taburnus is named after its two main peaks isolated limestone - Massif in Campanian Apennines .

It is entirely in the west of the Benevento province . It was formed in the Mesozoic .

In the north the massif is separated from the mountains of the Matese by the Valle Telesina with the river Calore Irpino and in the south it separates the Valle Caudina from the mountains of the Partenio .

The highest peaks are the Monte Taburno ( 1393  m slm ), the Camposauro ( 1390  m ), the Alto Rotondi ( 1305  m ), the Sant'Angelo ( 1189  m ), the Gaudello ( 1226  m ) and the Pentime ( 1168  m ) . They are arranged in a semicircle with the Valle Vitulanese in the middle .

The massif consists of two limestone blocks separated by the tectonic depression of the Piana di Prata .

The species that is characteristic of Mount Taburno is the raven . There are also woodpeckers , buzzards , red thrushes , sparrows and small mammals .

The flora in the lower areas consists of oaks , up to 700 meters, but walnut , hornbeam and ash are also represented, over 900 meters the beech dominates , between 1000 and 1100 meters the holm oak .

Monte Taburno has been protected since September 14, 1994 by the establishment of the Parco Naturale Regionale Taburno-Camposauro . It is also protected by the Taburno landscape plan, which came into force in 1996 .

From the top of the Taburno you have a wide view of the entire Caudina Valley . Apart from Partenio , on a clear day you can see Vesuvius and the Lattari Mountains .
