The Taiwan lady's slipper ( Cypripedium formosanum ) is a species of the genus Cypripedium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae).
features
The Taiwan lady's slipper is a perennial plant with a creeping, often branched rhizome that reaches heights of 30 to 40 centimeters. Two leaves are almost opposite in the middle of the stem. They are fan-shaped and measure 10 to 13 × 7 to 11 centimeters. The radiating nerves end at the leaf ends. The leaf margin is wavy and finely ciliated. The peduncle is glabrous or slightly hairy and has a single, nodding flower . The flower stalk and ovary are hairy. The outer and inner tepals are white, tinged pink as they fade. They are spotted red at the base. The lip is curved in the side view. The staminodium is rounded, triangular to arrow-shaped.
Flowering time is from April to May.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20, less often 30.
Occurrence
The Taiwan lady's slipper occurs in central Taiwan in forests and in open, humid places at altitudes of 2300 to 3000 meters.
