The Anglicism to go [ tu ɡəu ], to-go , take away , take-away and take-out ( English , to German "to take away"), German also take away sales , describes a sales concept of restaurants and Food stands where food and drinks are taken away and consumed outside the locality. The concept has existed since ancient times and is widespread worldwide. Take-away can also refer to the place itself where (also) to-go products are sold.

history

Remains of a thermopoly in Pompeii

The concept of prepared take-away meals dates back to ancient times . Markets and street stalls that offered food and drinks "to go" were already known in ancient Greece and were widespread in the Roman Empire , especially in larger cities, as many citizens in the cities had no cooking facilities. For example, archaeological investigations in Pompeii have found large numbers of Thermopolia where take-away was sold. In the European Middle Ages and the early modern period , dishes for on the go were mainly sold in markets. The industrial revolution increased the possibilities for the production of fast food and to-go products.

The term to go comes from the language of advertising and has established itself primarily in the specific use of coffee to go since the late 1990s from English-speaking countries in the rest of Europe and in many other parts of the world. The establishment by chains like Starbucks contributed to this. Before that, there was more talk of fast food in the non-English-speaking world (from around the mid / late 1970s).

Today, to-go products are sold as street food in or at a snack hall , snack stand , snack bar , snack truck or in restaurants, fast food chains and cafes. Opened meals can in part also be packaged as to-go goods for later consumption. The Food Sharing - App Too Good To Go prevails against food waste one by catering establishments can sell leftover food at a discounted price at Pick Up as a to-go product. To-go products can also be taken into drive-in restaurants . Grocery outlets located in petrol stations , train stations or airports also often offer to-go products.

With to-go sales, catering establishments can perhaps prevent an imminent closure during epidemic crises, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic . However, it was also banned in Austria during this crisis because too many people would gather in front of the restaurant. As an alternative, a delivery service is used.

packaging

Take away food and drinks are packed in paper, cardboard, plastic or foam containers and / or given out on or in paper plates or paper cups. A well-known representative of the packaging is the pizza box or the box-shaped containers that are often used for Asian noodle dishes. In Japan, the Bentō shape is particularly popular.

Aluminum packaging is also very popular because of its low cost. To-go products often contribute significantly to packaging waste due to the large amount of packaging with a lack of recycling , incorrect waste separation and waste disposal on streets and waterways. On January 1, 2019, the Packaging Act came into force in Germany, which introduced more environmentally friendly guidelines for the packaging of to-go products. In this context, a “to-go mentality” is often criticized, which stands for waste of packaging and other resources.

Other uses of the term

The term is no longer limited to food, but also generally refers to objects or knowledge that are taken with you when you are on the go or presented in a short, quick form. For example, there is Beauty to go as a term for beauty care on the go, a portable songbook is called Chor to go and the YouTube channels MrWissen2go and Sommers Weltliteratur to go . One car sharing provider was called Car2go and the name of the ARD - Olympia - Podcast is the play on words Go to Tokyo to go (for example: "Come to 'Tokyo to take away" "or" Come to Tokyo to get started "). The live system version of Microsoft's Windows 8 , Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems , which can be used directly from a USB stick or CD without installation, is known as Windows To Go . Many non-fiction books, audio books, podcasts and educational films also contain the ending “to go” in the title.
