The Talinaceae are a family in the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales) within the flowering plants . Up to 28 species are found in the Neotropics , Africa, Madagascar and Asia.

description

Fruit with black seeds of Talinum tenuissimum

There are shrubs , some species are subshrubs , annual or perennial herbaceous plants . The Talinella species are climbing shrubs. They are more or less deciduous. Some species form root tubers as permanent organs. There are two scales in the leaf axils. The alternate leaves are often a bit fleshy. A capsule fruit is formed.

There are tannic cells present. Some of the species are CAM plants and the other C3 plants . The chromosome sets are n = 8.

Systematics

Taxonomy

The Talinaceae family was established in 2001 by Doweld in Tentamen Systematis Plantarum Vascularium XLII. The basionym is tribe Talineae Fenzl within the family Portulacaceae. The type genus is Talinum Adans.

External system

These species used to be part of the purslane family (Portulacaceae). Molecular biological studies have suggested that the Talinaceae family makes a monophyletic taxon . There remains only the genus purslane ( Portulaca ) in the monophyletic characterized family Portulacaceae. (Applequist et al. 2006 and Nepokroeff et al. 2002)

Within the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales) the Talinaceae are closely related to the Halophytaceae , Didiereaceae , Cactaceae , Halophytaceae, Portulacaceae , Montiaceae and Basellaceae ; these eight families can be summarized as the suborder Portulacineae. The Phemeranthus Raf section, which was previously incorporated into the genus Talinum . is today again a separate genus Phemeranthus in the Montiaceae family and clearly delimited by molecular genetic data.

Internal system

The Talinaceae family includes the following three genera:

  • Amphipetalum Bacigalupo : it contains only one species:
  • Talinella Baill. (Syn .: Sabouraea Leandri ): The twelve or so species only occur in Madagascar.
  • Talinum Adans. (Syn .: Orygia Forssk. ): The 10 to 16 species are distributed from North America to Central America and the Caribbean islands to South America and are also found in Africa. Some species are neophytes in many parts of the world.
