The Salamonde dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Salamonde ) is located in the north of Portugal in the Braga district . It dams the Cávado river , which forms the border between the districts of Braga and Vila Real here. About 500 m southwest of the dam is the municipality of Salamonde .
The dam was completed in 1953. It is used to generate electricity. The dam is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete arch dam with a height of 75 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 281 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 284 m. The volume of the structure is 93,000 m³. The dam was designed by André Coyne and Jean Bellier .
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 130 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 1,700 m³ / s via the flood discharge.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 280 m (max. 280.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.42 (or 2.36) km² and holds 65 (or 63) million m³ of water 56.3 (or 55 or 57) million m³ can be used to generate electricity. With the 55 million m³ of water that can be used, 26.9 million kWh can be generated.
Salamonde I power plant
With an installed capacity of 42 MW, the Salamonde power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 232 (or 175, 231.2 or 244) million kWh .
The two Francis turbines and the associated generators were supplied by VÖEST . You are in an underground machine house. The two turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 21.8 MW and the generators 25 MVA . The rated speed of the turbines is 428 rpm. The nominal voltage of the generators is 10.25 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 10.25 kV to 160 kV using power transformers.
The minimum height of fall is 78 m, the maximum 125 m. The maximum flow rate is 22 m³ / s per turbine.
The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .
Salamonde II power plant
In 2011, EDP placed the order with Alstom (together with Ensulmeci ) to install a 207 MW Francis pump turbine with generator and other equipment in the new Salamonde II pumped storage power plant . The costs for the systems amount to approx. € 55 million. The commissioning of Salamonde II is planned for August 2015. The average annual production is expected to be 386 million kWh . The total costs for the Salamonde II power plant amount to around € 195 to 205 million.
