The San Juan Dam ( Presa de San Juan in Spanish ) is a dam with hydroelectric power plant in the municipality of San Martín de Valdeiglesias , Community of Madrid , Spain . It dams the Alberche to a reservoir. The dam is used to generate electricity as well as irrigation and drinking water supply. It was completed in 1955. The dam is state-owned and operated by Naturgy .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 78 m above the foundation level . The top of the wall is at a height of 583 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 230 (or 235) m. The volume of the dam is 195,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 86 (or 88) m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 1258 (or 1600) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 1357 (or 1500) m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 580 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 6.5 km² and holds 138 (or 162) million m³ of water; 138 million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity.

power plant

The installed capacity of the power plant is 33 (or 33.44) MW . The maximum flow rate is 60 m³ / s. The machine house is located below the dam on the left side of the river.
