The Tamakoshi ( Nepali तामाकोशी ) is a left tributary of the Sunkoshi in the Nepalese part of the Himalayas .
The Tamakoshi arises at the confluence of its two source rivers Rongshar Chu and Lapchi Gang not far from the border with Tibet . In the north, the Tamakoshi catchment area is bounded by the Lapche Himal mountain range in Tibet . The Tamakoshi flows mainly in a southerly direction through the Dolakha district in the Janakpur administrative zone . To the east of the river lies the Rolwaling Himal mountain range . The river takes on the tributaries Rolwaling Chu and Khimti Khola from the left . The Tamakoshi flows through the Ramechhap district for the last 20 km . Eventually the tamakoshi meets the sunkoshi flowing eastwards. The Tamakoshi has a length of 92 km.
Hydropower plants
A few kilometers above the confluence of the Rolwaling Chu, the dam for the Upper Tamakoshi hydropower plant (456 MW) is currently being built .
The Khimti hydropower plant (60 MW) is located on the lower reaches of the Tamakoshi, on the left bank of the river above the confluence of the Khimti Khola . Most of the water from the Khimti Khola is diverted to the hydroelectric power station via a tunnel, where it flows into the Tamakoshi.
