Tana De Zulueta (actually Cayetana De Zulueta Owtram ; born October 4, 1951 in Bogotá , Colombia ) is an Italian journalist and politician ( Verdi ). She was a member of the Italian Senate from 1996 to 2006 and a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 2006 to 2008 .

Career

De Zulueta was born in Bogota on October 4, 1951 to a Spanish father and an English mother. She studied in Geneva, Uganda, Beirut and London, among others. In 1972 she graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in anthropology and archeology with a thesis on "The Caste System in India" with honors. She then worked as a journalist for the BBC and ITV, among others . From 1977 to 1987 she was a correspondent for The Sunday Times , then until 1996 for The Economist in Rome.

In 1996 she was elected to the Italian Senate. During her first legislative term (1996–2001) she was Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly . After her re-election in 2001, she was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Committee on Human Rights and the Defense Committee of the Senate, Vice-President of the Italian Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe , and Delegate of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) . In April 2006 she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies on the list of the Italian Greens. There she served as Vice-President of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and a member of the Defense Committee. She was also head of the Italian delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EuroMed).

In September 2014, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights ( ODIHR ) declared her Head of the OSCE Observer Mission for the 2014 parliamentary elections in Ukraine .

Private

De Zulueta is fluent in Italian, English, Spanish and French, is married with a son and a daughter.
