Tandahimba is a district in the Tanzanian region of Mtwara with the administrative center in Tandahimba . It borders on the Lindi region to the north, the Mtwara district to the east, Mozambique to the south and the Newala district to the west .

The district has an area of ​​3760 square kilometers and 227,514 inhabitants (as of 2012). The land is bordered to the south by the Rovuma River , but rises rapidly to the Makonde Plateau, with an average altitude of 300 meters above sea level. There is an average of between 800 and 900 millimeters of rain per year, mainly in the rainy season from November to May. The dry season lasts from mid-May to October. With an average temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, it is coolest in June, the warmest month is October with an average of 28 degrees Celsius.

Of the population aged five and over, 58 percent spoke Swahili, five percent English and Swahili, 37 percent were illiterate. This largely corresponds to the average for the region (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 118 elementary schools, 28 secondary schools and two vocational high schools in the district. The primary school enrollment rate is 83 percent. Of those over the age of five, 26 percent were currently attending school, seven percent had dropped out of school, 39 percent had finished school and 28 percent had never attended school (as of 2012).
  • Health: A state hospital and three health centers are available to provide medical care for the population. Two health centers are run by the state, one by the Catholic Church. There are also 29 pharmacies in the district.
  • Water: The supply of good drinking water is difficult because the district does not have its own springs.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Agriculture is the most important industry, it contributes three quarters to the district income. The most important fruits for self-sufficiency are cassava, corn, millet and rice. Cashew nuts, nuts and sesame are mostly intended for sale. Cashew nut production increased from 15,282 tons in 2005 to 47,682 tons in 2011. Mainly poultry is kept of farm animals, but also goats and cattle (as of 2012).
  • Traffic: The road network in Tandahimba has a length of 1276 kilometers. Only 70 kilometers are national roads, 225 kilometers are regional roads, the remaining 1,000 kilometers are district roads, which are mostly unpaved and only passable for 75 percent of the year.
