Masasi is a district in the Tanzanian region of Mtwara with the administrative seat in the city of Masasi . The district borders on the Lindi region in the north, the Newala district in the east, Mozambique in the south and the Namyumbu district in the west .

Masasi has an area of ​​3869 square kilometers and 350,689 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district is bounded in the south by the Rovuma River and rises gently to the north, the capital Masasi is just over 400 meters above sea level. Individual rocky mountain peaks protrude from the flat land. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . There is a rainy season that starts in November and lasts through April. In the months of June to September there is hardly any rainfall. In total, it rains 900 to 1000 millimeters per year with an average temperature of 25 to 31 degrees Celsius.

history

The first known settlers were the Wandans in the 15th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Wakakuka immigrated from Mozambique, they still live in the district. The country was declared a district in 1958 but decentralized again in 1972. In 1983 the district was re-established.

Of the urban population, 70 percent spoke Swahili, nine percent spoke English and Swahili, and 21 percent were illiterate. In rural areas, the proportion of illiterate people was 31 percent (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: There were 121 pre-schools, 124 elementary schools, and 27 high schools in the district. In the preschools there were 212 pupils for every teacher. The primary schools attended 7245 students and 8081 a secondary school (as of 2016).
  • Health: There are three health centers and 37 pharmacies available for medical care for the population (as of 2019).

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Agriculture is the most important branch of the economy, 85 percent of those over ten in the country and 76 percent in the city make a living from agriculture (as of 2012). The most commonly grown crops are cashews, sesame, cassava, corn, and legumes. One third of the households in the City Council and almost half of the households in the Land Council also kept farm animals, especially poultry (as of 2012).
  • Fishing: Fishing is carried out in the Rovuma River and in ponds.
  • Roads: The main road connection is the T4 national road from Mtwara via Lindi to Masasi and further west to Songea .

Others

The Enzkreis has a partnership with the Masasi district with the aim of improving the health system and the quality of training in Masasi and increasing the use of renewable energies.
