Nanyumbu is a district in the Tanzanian region of Mtwara with the capital Mangaka . The district borders in the north on the Lindi region and the Masasi district , in the east on the Masasi district, in the south on Mozambique and in the west on the Ruvuma region .

Nanyumbu is located in the west of the Mtwara region and has an area of ​​5071 square kilometers and 150,857 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district is divided into two topological zones. In the north is the Makonde Plateau with an average height of 200 to 400 meters above sea level, with mountains rising to just under 1000 meters on the western border. To the south is the valley of the Rovuma River . The whole district is drained by several rivers south to the Rovuma, which forms the border with Mozambique.

There are two seasons, the dry season from May to November and the rainy season from December to April. The rainfall is between 400 and 850 millimeters per year, the average temperatures range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius.

The population increased by sixteen percent from 2002 to 2012, with this growth the population doubles every fifty years. While the proportion of illiterate people over five in the Mtwara region was 34 percent, 42 percent in Nanyumbu could not read and write (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: In 2012, 24 percent of those over five were currently attending school. Eleven percent had dropped out of school, 39 percent had finished school and 26 percent had never attended school.
  • Health: Four percent of the total population had taken out social security in 2012.
  • Water: Twelve percent of the population had access to safe and clean water, half got their water from open shafts, and a fifth got their supplies from rivers and lakes.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: In Nanyumbu District, more than eighty percent of the population live from agriculture. Corn, rice, cassava, millet, peas and grain are grown for self-sufficiency. Cashews, peanuts, millet and wheat are sold to improve household income. A third of households also keep farm animals, mainly poultry, cattle and goats (as of 2012).
  • Traffic: The east-west connection from Mtwara on the Indian Ocean to Songea and Lake Malawi runs through the district . From this a national road branches off to the south near the district capital Mangaka. It connects Tanzania with Mozambique via the Unity Bridge, which opened in 2010 .

  • Game reserves: The two game reserves Lukwika-Lumesule and Msanjesi are hunting reserves with hippopotamuses, elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo and waterbuck.
