Tank and the Bangas are an American musical group based in New Orleans , Louisiana . The band plays music with various influences from rock music , jazz , hip-hop , funk and other musical styles. She was nominated as " Best New Artist " for a Grammy at the 2020 Grammy Awards .

history

The members of Tank and the Bangas met at an open mic show called Jerk Chicken Sam'iches in the now closed Blackstar Cafe and Books in New Orleans and formed the band in 2011. They are led by Tarriona "Tank" Ball as lead singer, previously known as a slam poet . The band is complemented by drummer Joshua Johnson as musical director, Norman Spence on bass and synthesizer, Merell Burkett and Merell Burkett jr. on keyboard and Albert Allenback on alto saxophone and flute. Other active contributors are Jonathan Johnson on bass, Anjelika "Jelly" Joseph as background singer, Etienne Stoufflet on tenor saxophone and Danny Abel on guitar. Previous band members include Joe Johnson on keyboard, who now plays with the New Orleans jazz fusion band Slugger, and backing vocalist Kayla Buggage. Also, guitarist Keenan McRae and percussionist Nita Bailey were original members of the group and played on their debut album.

In 2014, Tank and the Bangas received the band with the title "Emerging Artist of the Year" from Off-Beat magazine in New Orleans. In 2017 the band won the NPR Tiny Desk Contest . On November 20, 2019, they were nominated in the " Best New Artist " category for the Grammy Awards 2020 , but were defeated by the singer Billie Eilish at the award ceremony .

style

Heather Rudow described the group's music in The Washingtonian newspaper as "a living amalgamation of funk, soul, hip hop, rock and spoken word." The group's musicians name a variety of genres with which they identify, including rock, folk , Gospel and Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph's invention “Soulful Disney”. In addition to Disney , the band also mentions anime as an influence on the band's “childish” and “magical” sensitivity.
