Taphao Thong ( 47 Ursae Majoris b ) is a Exoplanet that the light around 46 years from the sun away Yellow Dwarf Chalawan in the constellation Big Bear orbits. It is the innermost of the three known planets in the Chalawan planetary system .

discovery

The planet was discovered in early 1996 using the radial velocity method by Geoffrey Marcy and R. Paul Butler . Shortly before, both had also detected the planet 70 Virginis b , a few months after the discovery of 51 Pegasi b , the first known planet around a sun-like main sequence star .

properties

Taphao Thong has a minimum mass of around 2.53 Jupiter's masses and orbits its central star in around 1078 days (or 2.95 years) at a distance of 2.10 AU . It was the first discovered exoplanet with a long-period orbit. In relation to the solar system , its orbit is between that of Mars and Jupiter .

Measurements taken by the European astrometry satellite Hipparcos in 2001 initially suggested that the orbit of Taphao Thong had an inclination of 63.1 °. In this case, the planet would have had a mass of around 2.9 Jupiter's masses. However, it later turned out that the measurements are not precise enough to pinpoint the orbits of substellar companions.

Due to the mass of Taphao Thong, it can be assumed that it is a gas planet . Its atmosphere may contain clouds of water.

Origin of name

Like all exoplanets, Taphao Thong was originally designated with the star's official name and a lowercase letter, according to the order in which it was discovered. After a publicly advertised IAU competition , it was given an official name on December 15, 2015 after Taphao Thong, one of two sisters from the Thai saga of the crocodile king Chalawan.
