Tarana Burke (born September 12, 1973 in New York City ) is an American civil rights and human rights activist who campaigns for justice regardless of ethnicity and against sexual violence . The slogan “Me too” goes back to her.

Life

The African American grew up in a poor working class family in a public apartment in the Bronx, New York . As a child and as a teenager, she experienced sexual violence in the family. When she was 14, she moved to Selma , Alabama , and began providing food, clothing, and shelter to those in need, and helping out with community work for civil and human rights. In doing so, she became aware of the fundamental importance of the right to integrity : sexual violence occurred in her community, but was taboo .

Tarana Burke raised her daughter, Kaia Burke, who was born in Selma in 1998, alone.

Professional background

Tarana Burke graduated from the University of Alabama and graduated from Auburn University in Alabama . During her time at the university she organized press conferences and protests for legal and economic equality for people of all races.

Social Commitment

Girls for Gender Equity

Tarana Burke heads the Girls for Gender Equity organization in Brooklyn , which works for the rights of young black women.

Just Be Inc.

In 1997, a thirteen-year-old girl sat across from Tarana Burke and confided that she had been sexually assaulted . Burke was speechless when the girl told her story. "I had no answer and could not even say, 'I also [ English Me, too! ] I experienced something like that. '"This experience preoccupied Tarana Burke for a long time; it was the hour of her Me Too campaign.

Ten years later, Tarana Burke then founded the non-profit youth organization Just Be Inc . Its aim was to give unprivileged children and young people of color the opportunity to talk about their experiences with sexual violence in a protected atmosphere. Within this youth organization she started her campaign Me Too .

Me too

In 2006 Tarana Burke used the slogan “Me too” on the MySpace platform to raise awareness of sexual violence in society and to strengthen it. The campaign was designed to make African American women aware that they were not alone with such experiences.

When allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault with the hashtag #MeToo were made public in social networks against numerous celebrities, initially in the USA and later in other countries , their platform expanded into a global movement. Against this background, it is important for Tarana Burke to note that Me Too did not originate in a celebrity environment, but in a city full of exclusion and violence.
