economy

Until well into the 20th century, people lived on self-sufficient farming and a little cattle-raising in the rugged valleys of the Rif Mountains. The cultivation of cannabis has a long tradition in the Rifgebirge, but with the increasing demand from Europe, this branch of the economy has gained great importance. Despite official cultivation bans, the estimated total cultivation area still extends over 250,000 hectares.

In the immediate vicinity of the village is the Barrage Al Jomoaa - an approximately 2.5 km long and 300 m wide reservoir, which is used for both water supply and electricity generation.

history

In 1926, the place briefly served the Rifkabylen led by Abd el-Krim as the headquarters of the administration of the Rif Republic , when the previous capital, Axdir, was taken by a combined Franco-Spanish army led by Marshal Philippe Pétain ; the state ended with the surrender of the Abd el-Krim troops on May 26, 1926.

Others

At the beginning of the 2010s, Targuist made negative headlines internationally, as videos were shown on YouTube showing city officials and the local police taking bribes.
