Tavernelle is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Panicale in the province of Perugia , Umbria region in Italy .

geography

The place is 5 km southeast of the capital Panicale and 22 km west of the provincial and regional capital Perugia . The place is at 236  m slm and 2001 had about 2800 inhabitants. It is the largest part of the Panicale municipality and has more inhabitants than the main town. The lake Lago Trasimeno is about 9 km north of Lago di Pietrafitta (in Piegaro ) about 4 km to the east. In the northwest the place borders on the main town Panicale, in the northeast the municipality of Perugia begins, in the south lies the municipality Piegaro. The place is on the Nestore River .

history

The place originated in the 13th century as a station between the places Perugia and Città della Pieve . In 1490 the Ospedale dei poveri (poor hospital) was built on today's Piazza Magenta and was active until the middle of the 19th century. The historian Pompeo Pellini (* Perugia 1523; † 1594 ibid) referred to the place as Taverne di Bartuccio , where the market of taverns ( Mercato delle Tavernelle ) takes place. In 1816 Tavernelle was added to the municipality of Panicale, together with Missiano, Mongiovino, Colle San Paolo and Montali.

The Church of San Luigi Gonzaga
  • Palazzo dell'Orologio , historical palace in Piazza Mazzini.
  • Fontana del Leone , fountain in Piazza Magenta from the 20th century, which was created by the local artist Gerolamo Ricotti (* Tavernelle 1897; † 1987 in Rome).
  • San Luigi Gonzaga , church in the town center, which was built in 1579 and rebuilt in the 1850s. It was re-consecrated on August 9, 1857. The church was restored in 1943 and the high altar was redesigned.
  • Chiesa dell'Immacolata Concezione , church near the town center, built in 1970.
  • Santuario della Madonna delle Grondici , was built at the end of the 14th century as the Madonna delle Grazie chapel about 1 km south of the village. Contains works by Gregorio Tedesco (also known as Gregorio Gregorio , Il Teutonico or Theotonicus ), among them the canvas painting Madonna in trono con Bambino benedicente tra i Santi Sebastiano e Rocco . The new building started in 1950 and was consecrated in 1986.
  • Santuario della Madonna di Mongiovino , a sanctuary built from 1524 by the architect Rocco di Tommaso da Vicenza. Contains works by Orazio di Domenico di Paride Alfani , Mattia Batini ( Incoronazione della Vergine , created in 1709) and Hendrick van den Broeck .
  • Castello di Mongiovino Vecchio , castle complex about 2 km north, which is 490  m slm . Built by the government of Perugia in 1312. The castle's church is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and contains frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries.
