Taylor Gun-Jin Wang (born June 16, 1940 in Nanchang , Jiangxi Province , China ) is a retired American astronaut .

Life

Wang's ancestors lived in Yancheng , Jiangsu Province , China. Wáng Gànjùn (王 赣 骏) himself was born in Jiangxi as the son of Wáng Zhāng (王 章) and Yú Jiéhóng (俞洁虹 / 俞潔虹). In 1952, Wang moved with his family from Shanghai to Taiwan , learned to read and write at the Kaohsiung Elementary School , and then attended the Taipei High School affiliated with the National Technical College. After that, his father sent him to Hong Kong , where he began to study physics alongside his work as a seaman. After moving to California in 1963, he enrolled in physics at the University of California, Los Angeles . There he received a Bachelor of Science, then a Master of Science and finally also a doctorate. In 1972 Wang joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology as a scientist . There he was already working on experiments for the later Spacelab 3 mission. In 1975, Wang received US citizenship.

Astronaut activity

In June 1983, Wang was selected by NASA as the payload specialist for the Spacelab-3 mission.

STS-51-B

On April 29, 1985, Wang flew into space for the first time as a payload specialist on the space shuttle Challenger . The mission's payload consisted of the Spacelab of the European Space Agency (ESA). 15 experiments were carried out, mainly to investigate liquids and materials in weightless space. Two monkeys and 24 rodents were also on board for biological studies. 14 experiments were successfully carried out. The science satellite NUSAT was also suspended.
