The Te Mataili II (802) is the second Guardian class patrol boat and the first of its class to be made available to the island state of Tuvalu by Australia . It entered service on April 5, 2019 and replaced the Te Mataili , an old patrol boat of the Pacific Islands Forum , which had also been made available to Tuvalu by Australia and had reached its planned maximum age.

background

When the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was concluded, which extended the exclusive economic zone to 200 nm (370.4 km), Australia offered to make smaller patrol boats available to the twelve smaller states of the Pacific Islands Forum. The first boats were delivered in 1987 and in 2015 Australia announced that the old boats would be replaced with larger and more powerful boats.

design

Australian shipbuilder Austal won the AU $ 335 million contract for the project and built the ships at its docks at Henderson near Perth . The patrol boat was equipped with standardized equipment so that the boat is easy to maintain even in small, remote shipyards.

The ships are 39.5 m long and can cover 3,000 nm (5,600 km) at a speed of 12 kn (22 km / h). The maximum speed is 20 kn (37 km / h). The design allows a pair of heavy machine guns and a machine cannon with a caliber of up to 30 mm to be attached to the upper deck.

In July 2019, Inspector Seleganui Fusi , the commanding officer of Te Mataili II , hosted a delegation from Timor for a briefing exercise before their own ship arrived.
