history

The parent company of Teekanne GmbH was founded on July 16, 1882 in Dresden as a tea shop for "Japanese and Chinese goods and tea" under the name of R. Seelig & Hille . In 1888, the company secured the name Teekanne - as it was spelled Theekanne  - as a trademark . The Teekanne brand still exists today and is one of the oldest German trademarks with registration number 6541 .

In 1892 the company was bought by the employees Ernst Rudolf Anders and Eugen Nissle and has been family-owned ever since. The two entrepreneurs were the first in Germany to sell ready-mixed and packaged tea on a large scale. The composer Karl Alfredy wrote the “ Java song 'I let myself be too happy' (Tempo di Mazurka )” for the brand .

In 1913, the Teefix and Pompadour brands were registered and trademarked. The first tea bags came on the market in 1929. During this time, the company also sold its own development for the first time, a tea bag packing machine developed by Adolf Rambold . On May 6, 1937, Ernst Rudolf Anders, one of the company's owners, was killed in the explosion of the Hindenburg airship in Lakehurst, USA .

While the company was first run by the owner family in Viersen and later in Düsseldorf after the expropriation in 1946 , the expropriated parent company was relocated from Dresden to Radebeul . There it later traded as VEB Coffee and Tea. It was privatized with the fall of the Wall and taken over by Teekanne in 1991 as Teehaus GmbH . In order to promote the Goldteefix brand on television , the song Father and Son by Cat Stevens was rewritten and re-recorded in 1977 under the title When the Teapot Sings .

In Austria, Teekanne was founded in 1951 in Salzburg with its own production. In 1996 the branch took over the Kandisin brand , a sweetener brand well known in Austria . Since 1982 the local branch has been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions due to the state award .

In a legal dispute against Teekanne since 2011 - the company was sued by the consumer center for misleading advertising (illustration of fruits) on the package of the fruit tea "Felix Raspberry-Vanilla Adventure" - the Federal Court of Justice finally decided against Teekanne on December 2, 2015 . The company had already withdrawn the product from the market in 2012.

Since the structural conditions at the headquarters in the west of Düsseldorf directly on the city limits of Neuss did not allow an expansion, an expansion of the headquarters to Neuss city area has been under construction since October 2019.
