Banatska Palanka ( Serbian - Cyrillic Банатска Паланка , Hungarian Palánk ) is a small town in the south of the Serbian province of Vojvodina , in the Serbian part of the Banat .
geography
The small town belongs to the municipality of Bela Crkva in Okrug Južni Banat . Today the place has almost 1,000 inhabitants (1990: 976 inhabitants) and practically consists of two parts: Stara Palanka (German: "Alt-Palanka"), originally settled by Danube Swabians in the north and Nova Palanka (old Hungarian name: Haramvár) in the south on the banks of the Danube, formerly with a larger proportion of inhabitants of Hungarian ethnicity.
Banatska Palanka is located on the north bank of the Danube - opposite the village of Ram . The traffic between Banatska Palanka and Ram over the Danube, which is one kilometer wide, takes place on ferries.
history
Due to the border location between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy , the region was the site of numerous armed conflicts. Nova Palanka (also Uj-Palanka ) was captured during the Austro-Turkish War on October 21, 1788 by imperial and royal troops under the command of Major General Ferdinand Johann Nepomuk Count Harrach zu Rohrau (1740-1796).
