Terence Judd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Terence Judd (born October 3, 1957 in London , † December 23, 1979 at Beachy Head , southern England) was an English pianist .

Life

Judd learned to play the piano from the age of five and was the youngest participant ever to win the National Junior Pianoforte Competition at the age of ten . He then performed in the Royal Albert Hall and at eleven in the Royal Festival Hall ; the latter concert was broadcast on the BBC . He made his US debut at 14 and South America at 15. He studied with Eileen Joyce and Maria Curcio . In 1975 he won the shared 3rd prize at the Busoni competition , only beaten by the second-placed Staffan Scheja, as no 1st prize was awarded. In 1978 he received a shared 4th prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition and was immediately committed to a ten-day tour of the Soviet Union. Large parts of his competition program, including Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto and Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto , which he played one after the other, were recorded and later released on record and subsequently on CD. In 1979 he toured the Soviet Union again with the Leningrad Philharmonic .

Judd disappeared on December 16, 1979 and was found dead a week later at the foot of the famous "suicide rock" Beachy Head. The 22-year-old is widely believed to have committed suicide, and it has also been revealed that he had received medical treatment for depression . In his memory, his parents donated the Terence Judd Award for young pianists, the best-known winners of the British Stephen Hough in 1982 and the Russian Nikolai Luganski in 1996.

Judd's repertoire was focused on virtuoso romantic works, in particular from Franz Liszt to Prokofiev , but also those of Impressionism by Maurice Ravel and modern classics such as Barber and Ginastera . His playing is critically praised to this day for his virtuosity, characterized by mostly fast tempos and high risk.

Excerpts from CD guides

“An experience that makes you slip on the edge of a chair. Risks are managed with an attitude of obvious dedication. The effect is seldom less than gripping. "

"The game is razor sharp, brilliant and great"

- BBC Music Magazine

"There are few at this age today who have their potential"

“... one of the few documents of the phenomenal pianistics of Terence Judd, whose meteoric rise was cruelly ended at the age of 22 ... the audience carried away by the burning game ... with bared teeth ... Judds' finale has it all blazing fire from Martha Argerich's live recording with Kirill Kondraschin (but he gets her fingers more on the keys than she does). The 3rd Prokofiev concert gets a no less thrilling performance, and Judd's ringing tone, perfect chord balances and wonderfully clear and separate runs make it clear again what a finger-breaker this concert is ... Judd takes up argerich-like tempos again , but is more steely where it is poetic (...). It is particularly exciting how Judd carefully builds up the increasing tension until the end ... such captivating performances ... "
