The Territorial Museum is a museum for local and urban history in Babenhausen , a small town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in the Starkenburg region ( southern Hesse ). The museum, which was established in 2014, is housed in one of two half-timbered houses from the 16th century that are listed as a historical monument by the State of Hesse .

Building

The former courtyard of the Geiling von Altheim family (also: Gaylingsches Amtshaus ) consists of two gabled half-timbered houses on a massive ground floor . The two buildings are connected by a stone, arched driveway with a hand gate.

The half-timbered house (Amtsgasse 30) has a beautiful half-timbered structure with wild men and curved pincers in the parapet fields under the cladding . The door on the courtyard side has a Renaissance frame with pilasters and a triangular pediment . Inside the building there is a beautiful spiral staircase in an open housing. A date (1578) is on the sloping corner of the basement . This house is privately owned and is used as a hotel.

House number 32

The half-timbered house (Amtsgasse 32) has a half-timbered structure similar to that of house No. 30. On the east side of the building is the stump of a stair tower , which protrudes from the facade in a semicircle . Dates are on a corner cuboid (1555), the cellar entrance (1575) and at the top of the archway (1556). The museum is located in this house.

Monument protection

The property is a cultural monument in its entirety because of its architectural quality and its significance in terms of urban history . The building ensemble was awarded the "Hessian Monument Prize" and the "German Half-timbered Prize".

The museum was opened in March 2014, it documents the city history of Babenhausen and is gradually being expanded. At about 300 square meters of exhibition space - spread over three floors - are excerpts from some 5,000 years Babenhäuser city's history - from pre- and early history up to the 20th century shown -.

The Territorial Museum is supported by the city of Babenhausen, the Amtsgasse 32 foundation and the Babenhausen local history and history association .
